Background

Room to Read is a leading nonprofit focused on children’s literacy and girls’ education programs, serving low-income communities in ten countries across Asia and Africa. Room to Read turned to DAP to create a learning portal that could facilitate literacy education for thousands of students in Indonesia.

Discovery

With the goal of creating a resource for teachers to facilitate literacy education in the face of community constraints such as limited internet access, low bandwidth, and multiple languages spoken, DAP undertook a deep examination of the teachers’ needs and obstacles. After testing different concepts, it was clear that ease of use represented the most critical success factor in designing the new platform.

Solution

We created a dynamic literacy portal for teachers, including features that enabled easy access to materials, customizable lesson plans, and the capacity to digitally assign tasks to students based on reading level and subject matter interest.
